The Green Economy: An Indigenous Spirit of Indonesia?

The advent of capitalism marked a major turning point in humanity’s relationship with the environment. Humankind loses forests at a rate of 375 square kilometer each day. The earth is getting warmer, which increases the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes and rising sea levels. Indonesia could lose 2,000 small islands by 2030 due to the rising sea level. We see more and more small children suffering from asthma and reduced lung function, because our air is contaminated with so much pollutants. 

Mainstream economists postulate that capitalism and the markets are not very good at allocating costs when externalities are involved. There is, in fact, no market mechanism to take into account the cost of polluting our environment. Under pure capitalism, humankind pollutes the environment through energy generation, industrial processes, transportation, and forest activities in an unprecedented manner.
